When Homeschooling Feels Like It’s Falling Apart

2024 is over. Perhaps it wasn't as successful as you had hoped. All parents in our profession have days we feel like giving up. But I love that the school year straddles the new year. We have half our school year in 2024, and we get to finish the rest of it out in 2025. There's so much hope in that. We get to put what may have been a difficult year behind us, and restart for the new year. Recommit to our goals, giving ourselves grace, and going after this homeschool thing with everything we've got. It's not too late, and you haven't ruined your child forever.

All children will sometimes have a "bad year". Parents too! We aren't exempt. After having a "bad year" I like to look back on people who have gone before us and gather inspiration from their words. Here's a bank of some of my favorite inspiring quotes, scriptures, and lyrics to restart and refresh after a difficult year.
"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." - Martin Luther King Jr.
To me, this speaks of how our troubles won't last forever. If we have a bigger goal in mind, that can sometimes help us through the struggles and hard days. Our disappointment is finite. It will end. But our hope, if we can manage to hold on to it, can be infinite.
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run
and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint
." - Isaiah 40:31
I don't know about you, but some days of the last year definitely felt like crawling, not soaring. Some days I felt so weary from just living life, from trying so hard, but feeling like I was getting nowhere. This scripture is one I have to constantly meditate on, constantly remind myself of. Sometimes, somedays, I have to say it over and over before I begin to believe it again. But the Lord is faithful to remind my spirit of this truth.
We lose our way, we get back up again
It's never too late to get back up again
And one day you gonna' shine again
You may be knocked down, but not out forever

- "Get Back Up" by TobyMac
I grew up on TobyMac so this one feels like home to me. It's never too late to get back up again. You may be knocked down, but it's not forever. You can start again! This year will be better.
"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6
I fall on this daily. The Lord is so faithful to complete his good work. He will continue to grow us in patience and wisdom and will continue to shape our children into the young adults he wants them to be. It's so comforting to know that I can't mess up so badly that he can't complete his good work. Whew. Take a breath of that.
"Yesterday I dared to struggle. Today I dare to win." - Bernadette Devlin
No quote bank would be complete without this one. We struggled yesterday. Today, my friend, we dare to win.
